To Buy a Kindle, Or Not To Buy a Kindle: That is the Question

Okay so today is my birthday *squeals of excitement*, and I get to pick my present from my parents, I know great surprise! Anyway I was thinking I should ask for a little thing known as a kindle from Amazon as the Aussie dollar is so high against the US plus they just look so cool but I’m just not sure at the moment, I don’t know if I’d actually use it plus I do like the feel of an actual book, then again I’m running out of room to store my books also I wont have to carry a big book around in my bag whenever I go anywhere.

Basically long story short I’m just not sure if I should get one, so I really need some help from you guys, what do you think, do any of you have an e-reader, if yes do you like it? Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated, I really need your help, thanks!

I have the Sony Pocket e-reader - I've only had it a few weeks though. I'm really enjoying it so far. It doesn't have some of the fancier features of the Kindle, but I don't really need them (like the wi-fi etc) and I don't really like that you can only buy books from Amazon (just my two cents). I find it's really good for reading on the train - plus I find it's been saving me carrying lots of books in my handbag and getting a sore shoulder haha

Sorry, no useful e-reader stuff, I haven't succumbed yet - but happy birthday!

You have to know what you cannot always buy all the books from amazon.com unless they have the license for it for your country. Someone I know here in Canada bought a kindle and a lot of the books were restricted. Just make sure you check to see if any or all of the same books would be available to you.
I have a Kindle which I love. I had the same concerns as you because I also like having an actual book. But I became addicted to my Kindle. I still check out library books and buy a book in print here and there. I've told this to other people as well. Just because you buy a Kindle there is no law against you buying a printed book once in a while. You also need to research it because I've heard that if you live out of the country it costs more for the books and they charge a delivery fee or something. So I would check that out. I promise you'll love your Kindle. :)
I don't have a kindle. I do have the Sony e-reader but have only used it once :-/ I mostly just came over here to say....Happy Birthday!!! :D
Happy birthday!

I bought a Sony Touch not all that long ago and I love it. I still am reading print books, but the ereader is surprisingly convenient for things like reading standing up in a crowded train, lying in bed, for days when I have forgotten my glasses so I just increase the size of the text etc etc

The geographical restrictions are a pain. There are several books that I really want to read that just aren't available to Australians.

My ereader isn't a replacement for books as such, it is in addition to physical books.
Happy Birthday.

I have decided not to jump on that bandwagon yet.
Happy birthday, Romy! I don't have an e-reader, myself, but it's a handy thing to have on your way to work. My shoulders sag because I just CAN'T leave behind this book or that. And hey, you're still getting review books. I donate most of mine to the library in which I work because, like you, I'm running out of space.

I had a birthday during Aussiecon, myself, and bought myself a gift - commissioned a silver wolf brooch from Cindy Smith, which is just about to be posted. Not the same as a Kindle, but takes up less space. ;-)
I am an old-fashioned girl who prefers the paper and ink version of books, but I can see that e-readers are great if you travel a lot or don't have much storage space. However, it would be an awful lot more expensive if you dropped an e-book in the bath... :(
Happy belated birthday!

I don't have an eReader or Kindle, but I have been considering the pros and cons of getting one for awhile now. I think the best thing about them is ease with travel and taking up less room, being able to try something out that you're not sure of before buying it, and possibly cheaper reads.

But if you love books maybe it is really one of those things you have to decide you will use a fair bit. The big thing for me with not getting it is my obsession with books and I can't read on screens like I can with books. Having one doesn't necessarily mean you won't be reading books as much though.

I hope you were able to decide and had a great birthday.
I bought a Kindle about a month ago, the AU$ was not quite as high as it is now, but high enough so that the difference in prices was only a couple of $. I just have to say that I really love having it. It's so easy to hold and use and I've been able to fill it up with a lot of books quite easily without really spending much at all! It's definitely not a replacement for my physical books, I still continue to buy them at the same ridiculous rate! It's more to make a few things, like travelling, etc a little bit easier.
