Teaser Tuesday #26

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

1. Grab you current read
2. Open to a random page
3. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Today’s teaser is from The Opposite of Amber by Gillian Philip. Before last week I had never even heard of this book *face palm* but thanks to those wonderful folks over at Bloomsbury I was (surprisingly) sent a copy and I’m quite chuffed that I received this because whilst I’m only about 30 pages in so far I’m already hooked primarily due to the chilling prologue at the start and Philip’s beautiful prose which just rolls of the tongue, it’s like butter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The traces from her body were gone, the ones that said his name, but she had an extra skin of ice that protected her. The water’s surface was an icy coffin lid, like the one that covered Snow White, and she looked perfect like Snow White, or nearly.”

p. 2-3, The Opposite of Amber by Gillian Philip
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you who haven’t heard of the book before I thought I’d give you the blurby goodness…

‘They found the fifth girl right after the snow melted . . . the place where he left her was winter water, crazed with ice-feathers and dusted with snow. The traces from her body were gone, the ones that said his name, but she had an extra skin of ice that protected her and she looked perfect, like Snow White.’

Ruby and her older sister, Jinn, are on their own, just about making ends meet. Jinn is beautiful, with glittering blonde hair, and makes it her business to look after Ruby. They are horrified by, but try to ignore, the local newspaper stories of prostitutes who are murdered, their bodies eventually discovered underwater. Then the no-good Nathan Baird turns up on the scene – again – and Jinn starts to change and no longer has time to look after Ruby. And it seems to Ruby that Jinn herself needs looking after. Her beautiful glittering hair starts to lose its shine. And then Jinn disappears.

A deeply moving, chilling, and incredibly powerful thriller that celebrates the love two sisters have for each other and mourns the events beyond their control that will conspire to drive them apart.

Well there you have it, sounds good no? Come to think of it I want to pick it up now, bye!

Today’s teaser is from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins which is about this girl called Anna (duh) who is sent against her wishes to boarding school in gay ol’ Paree, otherwise known as "La Ville-Lumière" (The City of Light). Now I’m not too far in but there is a pretty crush worthy guy in it, I mean he’s gorgeous, has a British accent, is really friendly and has a great name Étienne St.Clair *sighs with longing* need I say more ladies? Apart from the lovely St.Clair Paris is also vying for my affections, so far Stephanie Perkins makes me want to experience Paris all over again with her beautiful descriptions, I also want to gorge myself on Parisian food. So basically … so far so good, I’m really enjoying Anna, very cute read.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Callipygian. Having shapely buttocks.”

- p. 44, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Today’s teaser is from Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr, this is the 4th book in the Wicked Lovely series. For those of you who haven’t read the books before they are about faeries and focus on the trials and tribulations between the different faerie courts (the High Court, the Summer Court, the Winter Court and the Dark Court) as well as their interaction with the mortal world. I’m liking Radiant Shadows much more than I did Fragile Eternity, the previous book in the series, which wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be. Radiant Shadows definitely has a darker tone to it, plus there is more Irial and Niall which is always nice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“He repressed all of those untidy things he felt, hid them away, and kept his expression stoic as he’d long since learned to do. It was foolishness, his urge to protect her, but he very much wanted a solution that didn’t involve Ani’s death.”
- p. 161, Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you guys want some more info on the series here’s a really great clip of Melissa discussing her Wicked Lovely series, enjoy!

Today’s teaser is from Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler, this is my first Sarah Ockler book and I’m loving it so far, Sarah has this beautiful way with words [see teaser below, a-m-a-z-i-n-g!] that makes me want to re-read certain sentences over and over again. And like any good YA book I’m also seriously crushing on the main male protagonist Patrick or ‘Little Ricky’ as he was once known, he’s very swoon worthy ladies!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“There is no more denying my feelings for him, no more lying to myself about control, no more weighing out the pros and cons, no more comparisons and warnings and walls. I’m tumbling and turning somersaults in the water, no way to know which end is up, which means certain death, which promises all the air I need to breathe.”

Today’s teaser is from The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger, I never even knew such an acronym even existed but it must, all I know is it’s not a very nice one, I mean who would come up with such a term, oh yeah teenage boys! So far I’m loving this novel, I don’t want to put it down. Ever since I first heard about The DUFF I wanted to read it and I’ve had high expectations and so far I’m not disappointed, I love Bianca’s voice whilst she may be sarcastic and act as though nothing fazes her she’s really a softie on the inside and Wesley’s pretty swoon worthy even though he was a huge ass at the start. Don’t you just love the cover as much as I do? It’s so fun, I love the back as well it’s this great combination of bright yellow and pink!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Everything flooded back, and I suddenly remembered exactly who I was kissing. I tore my hands out of his hair and shoved him away from me as hard as I could.”
- p. 30, The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)

Today’s teaser is from The Twin’s Daughter by Lauren Baratz-Logsted, I haven’t read too much of the book yet (I’m away at the moment helping a friend with some penguin research, it’s long exhausting days so not too much time to read, but at least there’s an internet connection!) however I liked what I've have read so far. From my understanding of the blurb the book is going to get pretty creepy, I can’t wait for that!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It was as I was creping past my parents’ door that I heard Mother cry out: the sound of someone waking from a nightmare only to discover that the nightmare yet went on. ‘The blood!’ I heard her cry.”
- p. 194, The Twin’s Daughter by Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Today’s teaser is from Torment the second book in the Fallen series. I’m more than halfway through and its only so so for me at this point, I haven’t warmed to any of the characters and I cant’ for the life of me understand Luce’s attraction to Daniel, he’s too controlling and I know he only wants to protect her but I mean he could at least tell her what’s going on, he’s so secretive, which is really very annoying I have no idea what to make of him!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“They could smell it before they could see it: the telltale hickory smoke of a good-sized bonfire. Then, when they were almost at the foot of the steep stairs, they wound around a bend in the rocks and froze as the sparks from a wild orange blaze finally came into view.”

- p. 107, Torment (Fallen #2) by Lauren Kate
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh and for your viewing pleasure here are two trailers I found on the internets for the book, enjoy!

* I know this is just a video and I’m just being a stickler for correctness but I just have to mention this, in the book Daniel’s wings are supposed to be huge, like I can wrap you up in my huge wings baby!, I’m afraid in this video it appear his wings have shrunk, those puny things couldn’t wrap around anyone

Today’s teaser is from Mercy the first book in a new series by Melbourne (my hometown) author Rebecca Lim. I absolutely loved the first chapter, it was so engrossing, and whilst a book about Angels is not new, Rebecca definitely shows us a new take on Angel mythology which I find refreshing. For those of you who are interested HarperCollins Australia has the first couple of chapters up online to read, click HERE.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Before I can reach out and hold him to me for another fleeting instant, before I can tell him I want to be found by Luc, now more than ever, Uri’s outline wavers and splinters into infinitesimal motes of light that wink out and are gone. And I am hit again by a wave of loneliness so vast that it feels for a second as if I am the one who has broken apart and cannot be put back together.”

Today’s teaser is from The Ghost & the Goth which I am really enjoying so far, Alona Dare, our protagonist, may be a real bitchy ghost (or “spirit” as she likes to be known) but she has some great one liners. Also don’t you just love the cover? I have some serious cover love going on for it!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Clearly, this business of walking through walls and such was a lot more complicated than I’d first thought. How come I could fall into the freaking house by accident, but I couldn’t step out of the car, no matter how hard I concentrated?”

- p. 77, The Ghost & the Goth by Stacey Kade
