Aussie YA Book Challenge 2011

Nomes over at Inkcrush and Nic over at Irresistible Reads have come up with the best idea ever, these two fabulous book bloggers have decided to hold an Aussie YA Book Challenge, so cool!

Here’s a little of what Nic had to say about the challenge and why they came up with it:

“If you haven’t noticed I am big fan of Aussie young adult fiction. Many of my favourite books (On The Jellicoe Road, Six Impossible Things, Raw Blue, A Little Wanting Song - just to name a few) are by Aussie authors and I now try to read at least one Aussie book at week.

So, I have been signing up for some reading challenges for 2011 when I noticed there was none for Aussie YA books. I know a few bloggers who are passionate about Aussie YA so I thought why not host a challenge to encourage more people to read Australian young adult fiction. So with a lot of help from Nomes at Inkcrush, together we have created the Aussie YA Reading Challenge 2011”

I love this challenge because it’s a great way to get both Australian and international readers to read more books by Australian authors which hopefully should increase their profile because we have some absolutely amazing authors in the land down under.

To top this awesome challenge off Nic and Nomes are also going to hold some giveaways throughout the year as well as having some guest posts and interviews from some awesome Aussie authors.

So if this sounds like something your interested in I definitely recommend checking out Nic’s post (click HERE) which describes what’s involved in the challenge. If your an Aussie reader you should read at least 12 YA books by Aussie authors from 1st January, 2011 to 31st December, 2011 (this is me). If you’re an international reader you are only required to read at least 6 YA books by Aussie authors (I gather this is so as Aussie books can be harder to source for international readers). Now below are some of the Aussie books I want to read next year ...

For Review:

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead (Penguin/December 7, 2010)

Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules.

She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir Princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardian to come.

Now the law has finally caught up with Rose- for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back… and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your life is about saving others, who will save you?

Thanks to Penguin Australia for sending me this review copy! I’ve already finished this, I couldn’t wait I read it (in fact I read it in a couple of hours) I needed to know what was going to happen to Rose and Dimitri and boy I was not disappointed, I mean I wasn’t too happy with the ending between Rose and another character that shall remain nameless but that’s just me being picky, overall I loved it!

Bought:

Matched by Ally Condie (Dutton Juvenile/November 30, 2010)

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

I won an ARC of Matched from Penguins ‘Between the Lines’ and absolutely loved it [see my review] so naturally I had to buy myself a finished hardcover copy, it’s so pretty.

If anyone’s interested I have an interview with Ally up on my blog simply click HERE for all the interviewy goodness!

Won:

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead (Penguin/December 7, 2010)

Yep it’s not a typo I did in fact receive two copies of Last Sacrifice this week, one I wasn’t expecting (the review copy) and another I was, this one, as I won a competition held by Penguin Australia.

Readings Best YA Books of 2010

Readings, which is a great independent bookstore with locations around Melbourne (I always have to visit their Malvern store whenever I’m down in Glenferrie Road), have picked their favourite books of 2010 (as rated by Readings staff members). One of their categories is for the Best Young Adult Books of 2010.

So without further ado I give you Readings Best Young Adult Books of 2010:
Fiona Wood

Fourteen-year-old Dan’s life is a mess, but he’s concentrating on six impossible things, including new school hell and a crush on the girl next door. Our reviewer said, ‘One of the stand-out young adult novels of this year ... I didn’t want it to end.’

Monsters of Men
Patrick Ness

Our reviewer said, ‘Following on from the events in The Ask and the Answer, Monsters is a gripping read that sees Todd and Viola forced into a war they never wanted ... Ness never flinches away from how horrific war is, and how frustratingly slow progress can be.’

Mockingjay: The Hunger Games Book Three
Suzanne Collins

This gripping adventure series about a deadly reality game show has been a word-of-mouth bestseller – and this final instalment doesn’t disappoint. Twice, Katniss has been forced to participate in the brutal Hunger Games. Twice, she’s survived against the odds. But the Capitol are looking for revenge.

This is Shyness
Leanne Hall

Shyness is a suburb where it’s always night. Wildgirl is a visitor from across the border. And the charismatic Wolfboy is her guide for a night they’ll never forget. Our reviewer said, ‘It’s easy to see why This is Shyness won the 2009 Text Prize. In a word, it’s amazing

Will Grayson, Will Grayson
John Green & David Levithan

This fabulously schizophrenic novel tells the story of two Will Graysons, exploring the dichotomy we all struggle with within ourselves. Our reviewer said, ‘A laugh-out-loud, cry-out-loud story about love and connection in all its forms: romantic, platonic, gay, straight and most importantly, musical.’

The Sky is Everywhere
Jandy Nelson

Seventeen-year-old Lennie’s older sister has suddenly died, leaving her with her Gram and pothead uncle Big. Our reviewer said, ‘Lennie narrates in spirited, sprawling, idiosyncratic prose that speaks perfectly of her age and her highly unconventional family life ... I can't recommend this book highly enough.’

White Cat
Holly Black

Cassell is uncursed – a straight kid in a crooked family of magicians and mobsters. Our reviewer said, ‘Nothing is as it seems in White Cat. Black edges towards perfection with this uncanny tale that’s part Harry Potter, part Sopranos. Full of a slimy, creeping kind of magic.’

Lips Touch Three Times
Laini Taylor

Our reviewer said, ‘One of those books that turns people who don’t like short stories into believers. This gorgeous book contains three short stories complete with goblins, a curse and lifelong secrets, and all revolving around a kiss.’

Ash
Malinda Lo

Our reviewer said, ‘Malinda Lo has taken the familiar tale of Cinderella and retold it with the weight of its original intention as a cautionary tale and the added evocation of the grief of a young girl who loses her family and way of life.’

The Piper’s Son
Melina Marchetta

Saving Francesca’s Tom Mackee has been damaged by the past five years, and wants to leave the friends and family who tie him to grief. Our reviewer said, ‘There is darkness in this book: the darkness of real life, real pain. But there is warmth and light too.’

What do you guys think? Do you agree with the picks? I’ve only read two books from the list (Six Impossible Things and Mockingjay) and loved both however I’ve heard really good things on many of the other books on the list, hmmm I might have to get some of these books on the list, good thing Christmas is coming up, I love getting books for presents!
